The Easiest Way to A Man’s Heart

I love food.  And food loves me.  We have a fabulous relationship here.
I also love my boyfriend.  And (I have a hunch) that he loves me.  A relationship too stupendous for words.
And so when words fail me at expressing my love, what do I do?

I make him delicious food of course.

Sadly, I have been unable to cook any thing for my handsome man since… May?  And even though we’re 37 days out from seeing each other, I’m already dreaming about all the deliciousness I’m going to cook up for him.
Because that’s what silly, love struck girls do when they’re bored you see.

Corned Beef Sandwich with Guinness Caramelized Onions and Grainy Mustard

And so I present to you Sam’s Wishlist of Boyfriend Food for the upcoming two week visit in January.

  • Huevos Rancheros Breakfast Enchiladas.  There’s black beans and avocado involved here. Nom nom!
  • My very own Mock Alfredo Chicken pasta.  A creation of my own using cream cheese, spinach, marinated chicken and, of course, parmesan.
  • Another recipe of mine, Mac n’ Cheese (stovetop).  Skipping the mustard and paprika for garlic and onion.  Served with broccoli of course.  However, I should note that I’m only making this IF he brings me Vermont white cheddar as promised.  No cheddar, no mac!
  • Corned Beef Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Guinness Caramelized Onions.  I came across this on Pinterest.  The boyfriend loves onions and with the combinations of Guinness, he’s gonna be smitten.
  • Chocolate Truffle Tart.  Pretty sure eating this is like eating straight chocolate ganache.  We’re gonna get chocolate wasted with this bad boy.
  • Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes.  Handmade by moi.
  • Boyfriend Cupcakes.  These have yet to be made but the idea in my mind is simple: dark chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting with chocolate ganache drizzled on top.  Essentially, the cupcake version of Smitten Kitchen’s cake. Be still my heart.
  • Home made pizza, using Trader Joe’s whole wheat pizza dough, olive oil, marinated artichokes, roma tomatoes and garlic.  I made this spontaneously one summer and I hoping to recreate it again.

Are you drooling yet?  I know I am.

GET IN MA BELLY!!!

Wee-Wee-Weekend!

Ah, its the weekend-finally!

Now that I work a full week, I have come to cherish these two days of freedom.  And these weekend is extra awesome; the folks are leaving town (without me-wha!) and thus I am left to make sure my mother’s garden doesn’t die in the heat.  This also means I am in charge of feeding myself dinner.

I am so excited.

Okay, let me explain.  I love my parent’s cooking; it’s delicious.  But I also love cooking myself.  And lately I’ve been craving some lovely cheesey pasta. Nom nom nom!  So I shall take inspiration from my ever favorite Pioneer Woman and make her Pasta ai Quattro Formaggi… with a few additions of course!  Starting with her basic cheesy pasta, I shall add some sauteed mushroom, spinach, sun dried tomatoes and maybe some chicken or meatballs.  And of course I must bake something!  Since my parents are going camping without me, I am making S’mores brownies from Sweet Pea’s Kitchen blog.  Yum yum yum!

As much as I love not having to buy groceries and making dinner every night, I do miss going to the grocery story and perusing the aisles and pondering what I could make.  So I look forward to getting back in the kitchen while the folks are gone.

November Already?

Well October, it was good knowing you.

I welcomed November in by staying up super late to finish up my giant cupcake project for 3D fundamentals.  Not my idea of a good time but it wasn’t terrible… it could have been much, much worse.

This week very much dedicated to doing as much homework as I possibly can before my weekend of super-fun-awesomeness.  AKA a horse show.  Obviously, I am doing quite well at getting my homework done which is why I’m here blogging.  Not.  Luckily, some of my homework included this…

But what is this?  Well if you put some of this into those and place those into that

You shall end up with this

And maybe, if you’re lucky… one of these special ones!

You’ll just have to go here to find out just what these are… and how to make some for yourself!  No, they’re not required homework.  But any excuse to bake is a good one.

Now, I’m off to do as much homework as I can before I fall asleep.

Ha ha ha!

Best of the Internet (Okay, My Favorites At Least)

Okay, this has been a long time in the making and I’ve finally put it all together; My favorite things online.  Yeah, not all the descriptions are that great but you’ll just have to click and find out just how great this stuff is for yourself.  If you’re already a fan of these places, you’ve got great taste.  If you find something you like, enjoy it.   None of the images are mine and are from their respective site.  Click, view, and enjoy.

Online Comics/Funny Stuff

NatalieDee

I came across this site randomly on google search for something… I can’t even tell you what it was but ever since that fateful day in high school I’ve been a devoted reader of these comics.

Buttersafe

A comic I found via Stumbleupon.  Funny and occasionally thought provoking.

xkcd

Many of you have probably already come across this site.  It’s pretty popular.  If you haven’t, you’re welcome.

DearBlankPleaseBlank

Another stumbleupon find.  Very funny.

HyperBole And A Half

I find this site HYSTERICAL.  Illustrated stories that are outrageously funny.  They’re random and strange, which sometimes all a funny story can manage to be. But for some reason, these are random and strange AND terribly funny.

The Oatmeal

Another popular site and for good reason.  They educate ( how to use a semicolon), test you (how many Justin Biebers could you take in a fight?), and amuse you (why I believe printers were sent from hell to make us miserable: MUST READ) all while providing you with amusement and curing your boredom.

Inspiration/Pretty Things

Saying Images

Devoted readers of my blog know how much I love this site; its my primary go-to for pretty photos to illustrate my thoughts.

Goodmorning and Goodnight

Similar to Saying Images but it goes beyond photos; music, quotes, videos and just interesting tid bits.

Creative Resume Designs

First of, ALL of these are amazingly creative and brilliant in their own ways.  Some are just a little too much to actually submit to a potential employer.  Don’t just look at them, READ THEM.  See how they describe themselves and their skills, other than ‘I am a great waiter because I care about the customer.’  Repeat after me: “I will read as well as look at these.  And afterwards I will look at my own resume with shame and henceforth feel inspired to make it just as brilliant.”  Carry on.

Amazing Wine Labels

Who says wine labels have to be dry and boring?  If you have an amazing 750mL of fermented grape juice, why not make the bottle just as amazing looking?

The CSS Awards

Hands down the most amazing websites available created using CSS.  Simply stunning.  Each website is graded on it’s design, creativity, usability, and content.  If you have some time to kill, look through these sites.

Informative/Useful Stuff

Infographic-How Color Affects Purchases

See?  Surfing the internet does help me with my homework!  Seriously, this nice little info graphic explains everything much better than my dry textbook

Pictaculous

A color palette generator; fun to play with and useful!

80 Extreme Ads

I don’t think I’ve seen any of these in print but they’re all really interesting and really grab your attention.  Many are from outside of the USA.  WARNING: they’re labeled extreme for a reason and once you see some of them, you’l understand why they haven’t been advertised in the US.

The Rules of a Gentleman

And not all apply to just men.

Photography

Mountain Photographer

A really lovely photo blog.  I envy this guy; he gets to travel the world taking photos of mountains!   So jealous… anyways, his photos are stunning and I’m trying to decide on a favorite to order and stick on my wall.

Tag Galaxy

Type in a tag and find photos… really neat.  It amazes me what people can come up with.

Image from 1 x

1 x - the best photos on the web

They aren’t kidding.  If you need some photo inspiration, look no further.

Food

The Pioneer Woman

I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!  She is living my dream.  I made a few of her recipes and they’ve come out great; real crowd pleasers.  Be sure to check out the rest of her site beyond her food once you’re done drooling.

Most Popular of FoodGawker.com

Still on my to-do list...

This list has changed slightly… but I find this particular collection to be really good.  This is also my nod to Food Gawker itself.  I. LOVE. This website.  I will spend hours on it scrolling, staring, reading, and copying down recipes.  Some of my best meals have come from here.

Food Porn Daily

“Click, drool, repeat”

Ming Makes Cupcakes

A pretty cupcake and a pretty easy recipe.  What more do you need?

Things That Made Me Smile

Signs

A really cute little video less than 15 minutes long.  Romantic story that made my day when I watched it.

Art Pad

Bored?  Wanna paint but don’t have any paint, brushes, or even a canvas?  Use this; it’s less messy.

Need To Want

Needs vs. Wants.   We all have them.

WEG XC Helmet Cam

Horse lovers rejoice.  This is the complete WEG 2010 xc as seen from Peter Atkin’s helmet as he completes the course on HJ Hampton.  So much fun.  Don’t forget to count your strides.

No Exscues

… not to watch this.

Deadline

Procrastination at it’s best.  This was a senior project of a student at Savannah College of Art & Design.  Really neat.

Paradox

This is how my morning went.

Woke up to this lovely view out my window…

as close to a Pride & Prejudice sunrise as I'm going to get in Cruces

It remined me slightly of Pride & Prejudice so I decided that classical music was needed.  Thank you Pandora (who actually played me some really good classical for once).  But then it made the mistake of playing the Harry Potter theme which reminded me that …

THE DEATHLY HALLOWS COMES OUT IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!

via Google Images

AH! So excited for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I digress…  Pandor continued it’s stream with the Peer Gynt suite which got me super jazzed up for breakfast.  And while in the process of making breakfast it gave me more movie scores with Duel of the Fates from Star Wars.  Loooovely.  Here was my breakfast, in the form of a mini photo essay.

saute some mushrooms then add two eggs; scramble

place on top of a whole wheat tortilla (archer farms from Target it my fave) and spoon on some salsa

drizzle on some red chile sauce ...

... like so (use green if you are so inclined)

top with some cheese, pop in the microwave for 30 seconds to melt, and VIOLA! a wonderful breakfast

Chocolate Peanut Butter Tartlets (Vegan)

….. I’ll post my photo essay tomorrow.

batman bowl of awesomeness

During our lunch and baking sesh Pandora, again, gave us another wonderful playlist.  We opted for indie this time, since we had just come back from the co-op and were attempting to make a Vegan dish.

Whoo!

M and I joked about getting our own cooking show and both agreed that it would go horribly as we always seem to forget an ingredient or something never comes out right and we end up making ‘that’s what she said jokes’, laughing hysterically and making a huge mess.  Essentially, we have way too much fun to be put on national television.

The afternoon…

The best part of my weekend, the one thing I had been anticipating all week finally came.

RANCH SORTING!

Ever since I saw my first SWQHA show last winter I have been eager to get on a Quarter Horse and learn how to work cows.  Today was my first day ever getting to chase a cow from horseback.  It was SO much fun!   The English girl is dying a slow painful death in me I fear.  Ha ha.

gonna go get me a cow

I started out doing the practice runs on Tequila, a cute little bay horse.   Then for the actual competition I ended up switching over to Blue  (you guessed it, a blue roan) who was awesome.  (Sadly, no photos of this :( I find it ironic that he embodies my favorite color.  I got my only complete round on him getting all the steers in at 1min 11 secs.  Growling and yelling at the cows helps, I learned.  Cow horses amaze me.  I’ve always know that Quarter Horses are ‘cowy’ but to actually be on top of that and have the horse go after that cow is somethin’ else.  They love chasing the cows, pinning their ears at ‘em and making them go where they don’t want to.  I was out there for a about 4 hours.  Pure awesomeness.  Nothing beats some friendly competition with truly wonderful people.  I finally made it back home to upload photos from the day and eat some more almost-vegan tartlets.  Yum.  I now leave you with my final play list from Pandora.  Kudos to it for giving me several hours of good music.
